Rainfall in Africa mapped in GIS database
Bank-On-Rain is currently reviewing rainfall data of African countries that could benefit from rainwater catchment installations. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has produced a handful of reports on rainfall and rainwater catchment potential in Africa. Examples include rainfall in 10 African cities in a GIS (Geographic Information System) database; another displays population and rainfall data across the continent.
Bank-on-Rain seeks to assist remote communities in developing countries in construction of simple rainwater catchment systems for their drinking, domestic, and agricultural water needs.
Women are typically the family’s primary collector, user and storer of rainwater. Bank-on-Rain believes that educating and training women in the community on the installation of simple, low-cost systems can help to alleviate many of the social, health, and economic problems that exist around water collection. This notion is further supported by a message received from a participant at the first African Women and Water Conference: “investing time to teach a community how to use new technologies is a must.”
Sourcing materials for systems locally with assistance from the community members will enable them to become further self-sufficient and resilient in the face of water scarcity and water quality problems.
